Hot Water Smells Weird? It’s A Plumbing Problem That Needs Attention

Ever turn on the hot water and catch a whiff of something that smells like rotten eggs or metal? You’re not imagining things. Weird-smelling hot water is usually a sign that something’s wrong with your plumbing or water heater, and it’s definitely not something you should ignore.

Let’s break down what might be causing that funky smell and how you can fix it.

What’s That Smell Coming From?

That unpleasant odor coming from your hot water usually points to one of a few common issues.

Bacterial Growth

One of the biggest culprits is bacteria inside your water heater. Sulfur-reducing bacteria can thrive in warm, stagnant water and create hydrogen sulfide gas, the source of that rotten egg smell. It’s gross, but it’s also pretty common in water heaters that haven’t been flushed in a while.

Anode Rod Reactions

The anode rod inside your water heater is designed to protect the tank from rust, but over time, it corrodes. When it reacts with the sulfate in your water, it can produce that same eggy smell.

Corrosion Or Rust

If your water smells metallic or rusty, it could be due to corrosion inside the tank or older iron pipes. This usually shows up in homes with aging plumbing or water heaters nearing the end of their lifespan.

Stagnant Or Contaminated Water

If water sits in the pipes or water heater for too long without movement, like in a vacation home or unused bathroom it can start to smell. Sometimes, loose pipe joints or tiny leaks allow organic matter to build up and cause odors.

How Do You Fix It?

Flush The Water Heater

Flushing your water heater helps remove sediment and bacteria. This is a great first step if you’ve never done it before (or it’s been a while).

Replace The Anode Rod

If the anode rod is completely corroded, it might be time for a new one. This small fix can eliminate the reaction causing that nasty smell.

Check For Leaks Or Corrosion

Have a plumber should inspect your pipes and water heater for signs of rust or leaks. Old systems may need repairs  or even replacement to restore water quality.

Treat Bacterial Growth

Shock chlorination, a process that disinfects your water heater, can help eliminate stubborn bacteria.
