Tough Clog? Here’s What to Try When a Drain Snake Doesn’t Work

Tried a drain snake but still stuck with a clog? You’re not alone. Drain snakes are great for clearing everyday clogs but sometimes, the blockage is just too stubborn. So, what can you do when your trusty tool just won’t cut it?

Let’s take a look at the next steps to try when a drain snake isn’t doing the trick.

1. Make Sure You’re Using the Snake Correctly

Sometimes the issue isn’t the clog, it’s how the snake is used. If your snake isn’t rotating properly, check the thumbscrew. That little piece holds the cable in place. If it’s loose, the snake won’t spin and snag debris. Tighten it up and try again.

2. Snake Not Reaching Far Enough?

If the snake just won’t hit the clog, it may not be long enough. Basic snakes are usually 15–25 feet, but deep clogs, especially in main lines, may need a 50-foot auger or even a power auger. If you’re maxed out on length, it might be time to level up your tools or call a professional.

3. Can’t Get Around a Bend?

Pipes with tight curves can stop a snake in its tracks. Try rotating the snake while gently pushing. Still no luck? Disassembling the P-trap under the sink gives you a clearer, straighter shot at the clog.

4. Snake Goes in But Doesn’t Bring Anything Back

It’s frustrating when you feel resistance, but nothing comes out. You might be dealing with grease or soap buildup instead of hair or paper, which the corkscrew can’t grab. In that case, chemical-free drain treatments or hydro jetting might be better options.

5. Using the Wrong Type of Snake

Not all drain snake are created equal. A toilet auger is designed to navigate the curves of a toilet without scratching porcelain. For sinks or tubs, use a small drum auger. Choosing the right snake can make all the difference.

6. Still Clogged? Time to Call in the Professional Plumbers

When all else fails, don’t risk damaging your pipes or fixtures. Professional plumbers have the tools (like motorized augers and camera inspections) and experience to clear even the toughest blockages safely.
